The stress of the work week makes us all feel like we need to get away, but the relaxation and fun we want is just across the bay.
Though many cities and towns on Maryland’s Eastern Shore are beautiful, St. Michaels stands alone. It has a winning combination of a historical background, shopping, award-winning restaurants, beautiful marinas, and the perfect small town charm.
St. Michaels’ history reflects its nickname, “the town that fooled the British.” In 1813, the British planned an attack on the town. Locals received word of it and hung lanterns from the tops of trees and sailboat masts. This trick caused the British to miss the town when firing cannons. The only house that was hit survived, and still stands today. For those interested in the history of St. Michaels, take a walking tour through the streets filled with buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Dive into the famous Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum to experience the world’s largest sea vessel collection, consisting of over 85 sail, row, and power boats. Other exhibits in the museum include both outdoor and indoor collections of items from fisheries and buildings such as the Hooper Straight Lighthouse.
Still haven’t seen enough of the bay? Take a tour of the famous marinas, houses, and scenery in St. Michaels along the Miles River on “The Patriot,” a 65-foot tour boat located out of the marina at the end of Carpenter Street.
After an exciting day on the water, stroll down the streets to enjoy great shopping in the small shops along Talbot Street and eat in restaurants like Ava’s Pizzeria, the Key Lime Café, Bistro St. Michaels, and The Crab Claw. Find the ultimate relaxation at Linden Spa, less than a mile from downtown.
If one day is not enough, make it a weekend! Find luxurious and affordable stays at St. Michaels Harbour Inn Marina & Spa overlooking the bay.
