Spirit Week is always packed with exciting events, but the culmination of the week is the Homecoming football game. On Friday, varsity football took on Boys’ Latin in a tight battle that came down to the wire, one that ended with a score of 21-20 in favor of BL.

JC jumped on the board early in the first quarter after junior quarterback Qadir Ismail dropped back to pass, rolled out, and ran the ball into the end zone to go up 7-0. However, BL then scored two touchdowns, making it a 14-7 game.

With 6:48 left in the third quarter, Ismail hit senior wide receiver Avery Jones on a slant route across the middle in stride. Jones split two defenders and took off for an easy score, tying the game at 14 each. However, BL scored again shortly after to make it 21-14.

Early in the fourth quarter, BL was driving deep into JC territory before Jones came down with a key interception with 9:52 left in the game. However, JC was not able to capitalize on the turnover. After another defensive stop, JC got the ball back.

Ismail hit junior wide receiver Danny Schall out of the slot for a key conversion on third down, which set up a 47-yard touchdown pass from Ismail to senior wide receiver Niko Rice. Ismail dropped the ball perfectly over the top and into the corner of the end zone to Rice.

But the ensuing extra point was blocked, keeping JC behind 20-21.

There was still hope for a win after JC got the ball back with a minute left in the game, but BL picked Ismail off, sealing the game up.

Next week, varsity football hosts conference opponent St. Vincent Palotti at 7 p.m on Friday.
