Week in Sports: Week of Jan. 23

Keeping pace with a Mercy High School runner, junior Laura Amrhein races in the second leg of the 800m relay. The women’s indoor track and field team competed in the IAAM Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, Jan. 27, coming in fourth place out of eight teams in the A conference.

Women’s Basketball — Monday, Friday

The women’s basketball team played in two games this week, one on Monday, Jan. 23, against Dunbar High School and one on Friday, Jan. 27, against St. Vincent Pallotti. The team pulled out a 64-41 win against Dunbar High School but lost narrowly, 36-39, against St. Vincent Pallotti. According to junior forward Nikki Hunter, “It was a very close game [against Pallotti] and we fought hard until the very end, but still fell short 3 points.”

Women’s Indoor Track and Field — Friday

The IAAM Indoor Track and Field Championships took place on Friday, Jan. 27, at PG Center where the women’s indoor track and field team placed 4th out of eight teams. Two runners, senior Charlotte Haggerty and junior Chika Chuku, both broke several school records in individual and also relay races. Haggerty broke records in the 55m and 200m, and Chuku broke the record for the 300m. They were both also part of the record breaking 200m relay team along with seniors Caroline Barwick and Alexa Martinez and the 400m relay team along with seniors Abby Hormes and Alexa Martinez.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field — Friday

The men’s indoor track team traveled on Friday, Jan. 27 to PG Center, along with the women’s team. In the MIAA Championships, the team placed 11th out of 12 teams with junior David Pajerowski scoring the team’s eight varsity points in the pole vaulting event. The JV team placed fifth out of 12 with a score of 65.

Sophomore distance runner Bryan Stancliff believes that the team performed well at championships, but there’s a lot of room for improvement. “Improvements for next year would be for all of runners to show up to the most amount of practices. You could easily tell who was actually putting in the time and improving over the season,” Stancliff said.

Men’s Basketball — Wednesday, Friday

The men’s basketball team had two home games this week. The first was on Wednesday, Jan. 25, against Mt. Carmel, which they lost 49-62 in an equally matched games. On Friday, Jan. 27, they blew out McDonogh 83-48 with support from a large student section.

Men’s Swimming — Wednesday

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, the men’s swim team competed against Saint Peter and Paul High School and St. Mary’s High School at the Bel Air Athletic Club in their last meet of the regular season. The team lost 29-43 against Saint Peter and Paul and lost 29-55 to St. Mary’s. Their next competition is the MIAA Championships on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Wrestling — Wednesday

The wrestling team traveled to the McDonogh School on Wednesday, Jan. 25, and lost 3-72. Their next meet is Wednesday Feb. 1 against Boys’ Latin and Gilman at Boys’ Latin.
