Senior Andrew Kappel reaches for the ball in his doubles match on Tuesday, April 4. Kappel and senior doubles partner Daniel Robinson played against Beth Tfiloh and won 2-1.

Tennis team focuses on rebuilding

After the men’s tennis team finished their season with a disappointing record of 0-8, they are looking to rebuild in the future and to focus on their singles matches.

According to assistant coach Rodney Johnson, he was proud of the doubles teams. “The doubles teams won the majority of their matches, but we couldn’t win any single matches. That’s why our overall record was 0-8,” he said.

Johnson, however, attributed the success of the team to the senior doubles players Andrew Kappel and Daniel Robinson, as well as juniors Hunter Peverley and Stevie Lutche. “I was pleased with how the doubles progressed over the course of the season, but in order to have success, we need to win the single matches,” Johnson said.

Kappel concurred with Johnson, but felt that the team put in a lot of effort. “I would say, overall, it was a disappointing season because we didn’t make it to the playoffs, but we made a lot of strives…We were so close, but sometimes it just didn’t break for us, and that’s how sports are sometimes,” he said.

According to Kappel’s doubles partner, Robinson, despite their lack of experience, he was proud of how far they came as in the doubles matches. “It was our first year playing together and my first year playing tennis at all. The double teams were solid,” Robinson said. “If a few points had gone our way, we could’ve gone to the championship [for doubles teams] and even won the title.”
