While the Chipmunk’s “Squeakquel” was directed towards younger children, I found myself laughing as well.
The movie begins with a debilitating injury to Dave Seville, the chipmunks’ caretaker, which leaves him in a full body cast, thanks to, of course, Alvin.
The care of the chipmunks is then left to Dave’s painfully shy, slacker cousin, Toby.
Toby follows Dave’s wishes and enrolls the chipmunks in high school, where they are forced to endure cruel pranks and mistreatment by teenage boys who are jealous of the attention that the chipmunks are receiving from the girls.
When the chipmunks’ female counterparts, the Chipettes, are introduced, the movie turns into a “high school musical” competition between the male and female chipmunks.
My seven year old sister loved the movie, while my dad, who had planned to sleep through the movie, found that he enjoyed it as well. Still, his comment that every movie he watches turns into a chick flick remained true with the “Squeakquel.”
The soundtrack of the movie was very good, although some may not enjoy the chipmunks’ versions of many of today’s top pop hits.
The Chippettes sang Beyoncé’s hit “Single Ladies,” “Hot N Cold” by Katy Perry, and “So What” by Pink.
The Chipmunks sing “You Spin Me Round” by Dead or Alive.
Together, the Chipmunks and Chippettes sing “We are Family” by Sister Sledge and “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas.
As in the first movie, the graphic animation of the little critters was very realistic.
While the movie is a comedy, it also teaches moral lessons, from the importance of family to being kind to others. Since the movie is directed to children, these themes are perfect.
The movie is a great family film, but children will likely enjoy it more than their parents.
