As Miley Cyrus’ ”Hannah Montana” door closes, it’s only fair for another one to open for her.
In “The Last Song,” based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, Cyrus plays a rebellious and angry teenager who is forced to spend the summer with her divorced father (Greg Kinnear). She falls in love with a nice, southern boy, Will Blakelee (Liam Hensworth) in the stereotypical small town. Of course.
Cyrus’ character, Veronica “Ronnie” Miller, has a gift for playing the piano and was even accepted into Juilliard, a prestigious college of the arts. It seems that the divorce of her parents has caused Ronnie to stop playing.
Cyrus portrays the troubled teen in the same way she portrays all her roles, pouty and slouchy, but for the first time, it worked. As she spends more time in her father’s small town, Georgia home she learns more about herself and about her father.
Unlike her other roles, this movie was not centered around Cyrus’ singing ability.
That particular talent was only shown in a small scene where she sings along to Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved.” This showed that the movie strived to focus on her “acting” rather than her singing abilities.
Opposite Cyrus was Hensworth, making his debut performance in a starring role, though he did have a small speaking role in “The Narrows” with Nicholas Cage. It’s a big deal, I know.
He did a nice job with Cyrus and they did have great chemistry, considering they are dating off screen as well. It also didn’t hurt that he was nice to look at.
But, as with every Spark’s novel, just when things are working out, everything is not what it seems for the protagonist. As the plot develops, Cyrus gets more slouchy and more pouty.
The movie ends making you smile, but it sort of left me empty inside. Although I had mixed feelings about the movie, I still enjoyed seeing it. It is worth renting if you’re a Cyrus fan.
