The movie Just Wright is a fairy-tale, a comedy that was both humorous and engaging.
Leslie Wright (Queen Latifah) is a physical therapist in New Jersey. She loves her job, her family, and the New Jersey Nets basketball team. She and her god sister, Morgan (Paula Patton), go to many Nets games together, but for very different reasons. Leslie goes to these games for her love of the team and the sport. Morgan goes to these games in search of a rich player whom she can marry and make a brand name herself.
One night while Leslie is at a gas station, she sees the Net’s star player, Scott McKnight (Common), and impresses him with her knowledge of basketball and scores and invite to a party at his house. She brings Morgan along, but when they get there, Scott is more impressed with Morgan than Leslie, setting up a love triangle that becomes the central conflict of the movie.
When Scott experiences a knee injury, Morgan calls on Leslie to help him because she doesn’t believe that Leslie can harm her relationship. When she hears that Scott may not be able to get back on the team because of the severity of his injury, Morgan up and leaves him and leaves nothing but a note behind.
Initially, Scott and his mom kick Leslie out of the house because they believe that she was in on the scheme. But they allow her to come back when they realize that they need her for Scott to recover.
As soon as Scott’s money flow is stable again, Leslie feels that her relationship with Scott has been strengthened. Then, Morgan returns. Throughout the movie, it seems that Leslie should be with McKnight because she loves him for who he is, not for his money like her god sister Morgan.
The movie also features and almost exclusively African American cast. Queen Latifah and Common aren’t your stereotypical romantic comedy lead roles either.
While Common’s acting wasn’t bad, his line delivery was very monotonous Queen Latifah continues to prove herself as an actress who can transform herself to fit into the character she needs to be. Although the title is a bit too generic, the movie itself was both humorous and enjoyable.
