Scandal-filled “Easy A ” always has the audience’s eyes glued to the screen as they wait for more drama to unravel.
The movie starts out like any typical high school scene with that one girl who feels invisible. Olive is that girl. As the main character of the movie, Olive (Emma Stone) becomes the center of her high school’s attention when her rumors she spread about herself spread like wildfire.
The rumors begin when Olive accepts money from people for imaginary flings. Originally she saw it as something to boost the popularity of other people, but she didn’t see how it would affect her own reputation.
The quick spread of information is overly dramatic. It shows high school as a complete war zone where no one gets along.
Olive quickly gains a scandalous reputation, and Olive soaks it up, feeling that her life is similar to Hester Prynne’s in the “Scarlett Letter.” Just like Hester Prynne, she embroiders a red “A” on her clothes for adulterer.
The red “A” on her clothes is slightly cheesy and unnecessary. It is funny to see people’s reactions to her clothing choices.
When Olive starts to fall for her old crush again, she has to decide how to deal with her web of lies. She tries to find a way to get the spread of gossip to work in her advantage, making for an interesting plot twist.
Penn Badgely stars alongside Stone as Olive’s crush, Todd. He gives a great performance as the school’s mascot and just a witty and charming boy that everyone loves.
Olive’s enemy Marianne (Amanda Bynes) doesn’t fit the normal stereotype either. As the leader of the school church group, Marianne torments Olive because they don’t share the same beliefs.
Bynes once again proves her versatility as an actress and keeps the audience interested with her hilarious facial expressions. If not for anything else, the movie is worth seeing just to see these two characters.
Mrs. Griffith (Lisa Kudrow) provided even more laughter as the schools guidance counselor. Although she fit her role well, Kudrow was more impressive as Phoebe on the 1990s sitcom “Friends.”
“Easy A” takes high school drama to a new level. Although exaggerated, it shows how rumors spread in school and how people who are different are treated poorly.
Like any high school movie, there were parts that were just too cheesy, but despite the cheese, it was worth the trip to the movies.
