“Saturday Night Live” has been on the air for the past 36 years.
Saturday, September 25 the season premiere of SNL debuted with host Amy Poehler and musical guest Katy Perry.
So did the show start out with a hit or miss?
The opening act was a roast of Christine O’Donnell, the republican nominee for U.S Senate in Delaware. They dabbled in her controversial past, including her admission that she experimented with witchcraft.
Kristin Wiig played O’Donnell and did a fabulous job capturing her nonchalant mannerisms, shaking off the witchcraft controversy with the comment, “Don’t you remember being 16?”
The Bronx Beat was another hit skit, featuring Perry wearing a revealing Elmo shirt—an obvious parody of Perry’s recent media firestorm for her inappropriate attire in her “Sesame Street” debut. Perry showed that she didn’t care if Sesame Street banned her or not.
The Ground Zero Mosque Commercial was the night’s winning skit. It poked fun at the RNC (Republican National Committee) for worrying about the mosque being placed “a stone’s throw [away]” from Ground Zero. The skit was played out well because it was short, hilarious, and to-the-point.
Although Perry looked fantastic during her musical performance, her voice was not so fantastic. Her performance of “Teenage Dream” was hard to listen to.
Weekend update featuring Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler is always a favorite of mine. Although Jay Pharoah did an average portrayal of Will Smith in the skit, Fred Armisen did his hilarious, home-run portrayal of New York’s Governor Patterson, acting blind and confused. However, this time his recurring portrayal was even funnier because Governor Patterson actually appeared in the show during the skit.
In this season of SNL, I’m hoping to see a lot more skits like “The Ground Zero Mosque Commercial.” SNL, just remember to keep things short and funny, because that is what all of the fans want. Short and funny.
