Episode 3 – Truly Content
I was rather disappointed by the lack of creativity in last week’s episode, so I had pretty low expectations for this week’s episode. I just haven’t felt intrigued by the new characters, and there are too many major plotlines with too little detail. For now, I can only hope that they will connect somehow (and knowing Marc Cherry’s style, they will eventually).
Susan’s plotline is still terribly dull—she finds herself in yet another catfight. Apparently, another one of the website girls, Stacy, has been copying Susan’s signature moves. Big deal. Next week could be interesting, though, when Susan has to figure out how to hide herself as Maxine chooses her as the poster girl for the website.
On Wisteria Lane, the newcomer, Beth, is finally starting to get my attention. I didn’t like her at first because I thought she was a psycho—who in her right mind would marry a murderer? Really! In the past episodes, she was too timid to stand up to her husband. Now, it looks like she’s going to turn against Paul and join forces with the other housewives. I like it. Expect major drama between this couple soon.
On a side note, was I the only one who loved the poker game scene with Beth and the other women of Wisteria Lane? The look on everyone’s face was priceless when Beth mentioned that her husband was a “real lady killer.” Beth better be careful with drinking so much chardonnay—she might let slip something that Paul doesn’t want her to say.
Speaking of new characters, I don’t have anything nice to say about Renee. She’s so up in everyone’s business, which I suppose is to be expected on the Lane. However, she’s a guest and not a real housewife, so she should calm down before she starts causing drama—oh wait, too late.
Renee convinces a reluctant Bree to go “stud hunting.” (side note: Bree, drab colored cardigans, even with shiny buttons, do not count as evening attire). Unfortunately, both women have an eye out for Keith, the handyman who was last seen without a shirt on.
After going to the club, Renee invites Keith over, and Bree naturally has to stop them. I’ve grown to love Bree’s creativity as she calls Keith about a “plumbing emergency.” He leaves Renee, finds Bree, and before the night is over, Keith and Bree have a date for later in the week. Obviously, Renee is not going to accept this rejection lying down, so expect a showdown between the two women next week.
Bree’s not the only housewife having man troubles. Lynette finds that a doctor prescribed anti-anxiety medication for Tom. Personally, I don’t see why she’s so concerned about it. He’s depressed and needs help. So when Lynette convinces Tom get another doctor’s recommendation, I can only laugh when Tom comes home with medical marijuana.
Lynette is horrified of course, but she of all people should know that it can relieve pain and stress. Remember when grandmother Scavo made some magic brownies a few seasons ago?
I don’t see why Lynette is so against her husband’s prescription, but I do find it hysterical when she switches his marijuana out with oregano from her spice cabinet. “Man, this is some really strong stuff,” Tom says when he smokes the “marijuana” for the first time. If that line didn’t make me laugh hard enough, the smug look on Lynette’s face certainly did.
Unfortunately for Lynette, Tom finds out that he’s been deceived when Carlos informs him that he’s smoking kitchen spices. How can he not find the whole situation funny? Lynette sure does. “Why don’t you snort some baking powder? You’ll feel better!”
Eventually, Tom realizes that he doesn’t need drugs to feel better. There’s a big “awww” moment at the end of the episode when the whole Scavo family sits on the porch together, enjoying each other’s company
Not all families have a happy ending, however. After signing a document promising not to sue the hospital over the accidental child switch, Gaby is distraught. She begins noticing children who look similar to herself, and she realizes that she must find her real daughter and Juanita’s real mother. Without telling Carlos, she hires a private investigator.
Eva Longoria Parker [Gaby] deserves some kind of award for her portrayal of a grieving mother. And, come to think of it, so does Madison de la Garza [Juanita], who nearly left me in tears at the end of the episode when she tells Gaby, “I don’t want to get married. I don’t want to leave you and Daddy ever.” Aw, what a precious moment—one that is super close to being ruined if the private investigator actually gets in touch with Juanita’s biological mother.
