Episode 8 – Sorry Grateful
Normally, I’m not much of a fan of holiday-themed episodes, so I wasn’t too thrilled to hear that there was going to be a Thanksgiving show for “Desperate Housewives.” If I didn’t feel obligated to write this blog, I probably would have skipped it completely.
I’m glad now that I didn’t skip it.
While the parties weren’t quite the typical extravagant feasts that accompany any holiday celebrated on Wisteria Lane, the drama was certainly over-the-top. From divorce announcements to deportation of illegal immigrants, there wasn’t a single dull moment in the episode.
The only low point in the episode was Susan’s frightening obsession with Lynette’s baby. Seriously, Susan? Just because you miss Mike, your beautiful husband, this does not give you an excuse to practically kidnap your neighbor’s child.
When Lynette caught Susan in the act and Susan tried to explain herself, I thought of an easy solution to her problem. Attention Marc Cherry and the other show writers: bring Mike back. It would make everyone’s lives that much better.
While Lynette and Susan were crying over Susan’s pathetic life, Lynette forgot that she left her husband alone with Renee the home wrecker. We all know what Renee’s capable of doing, so why give her an opportunity like this to seduce Tom? He’s such a child—he wouldn’t even see it coming.
I was just glad that Renee controlled herself. It turns out she’s not as jealous as she is proud of Lynette for picking the right type of husband. Renee seems to have more sense than I thought.
Meanwhile at Bree’s, I was shocked that Keith’s parents announced their plans to divorce in the middle of dinner.
Can’t people hold off on news like this until after celebrating a day when we’re supposed to be thankful for what and who we have?
At least the announcement made for hilarious remarks from the McCluskeys, who really know how to make any awkward situation ten times more uncomfortable.
After the dinner that goes awry, Keith was seen playing around with a small jewelry box that obviously held an engagement ring. I can’t wait to see if Keith will follow through with his plans to propose to Bree. I’m starting to like him a lot. The age difference is slightly weird, but I guess love knows no age.
Unlike Bree’s attempt at having a quaint traditional Thanksgiving meal, Gaby chose to have a Mexican Thanksgiving with margaritas and all. Obviously, she just wanted to impress the Sanchez couple, the adoptive parents of her biological daughter.
Because she’s so scatterbrained, Gaby forgot dessert, which put Carlos in a minor tizzy. When he sent her and Hector back to the grocery store, I had that inexplicable feeling that something bad was going to happen.
It would figure that Gaby would make him drive and that he would get pulled over. When Hector failed to produce a license—not even a fake one!—the cop arrested him on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant.
It’s kind of Gaby’s fault, she pressured Hector into driving on the shoulder of the road, but I still felt awful for her that the situation ended up in his arrest and possible deportation. Meanwhile, Carmen will have to flee Fairfax, and Grace—an American citizen—will need some place to stay.
Maybe Gaby will adopt her? But that could be bad news for Juanita, who already feels neglected every time Grace comes over. Still, it could work.
In the most dramatic plotline of the night, Paul and Beth started their evening looking like an adorable “just married” couple, enjoying a quiet dinner together. Scenes like these make me—and I know I’ll regret saying this later—actually like Paul.
But then Beth admitted to her mother, Felicia Tillman (who’s thankfully still locked up behind bars), that she is starting to fall in love with him, and ol’ Mrs. Tillman went so insane that she had to be dragged out of the room. She’s such a psycho that she might even be scarier than Katherine, that woman who I loved to hate last season.
Felicia’s plan to get back at Paul Young for murdering her sister Martha is starting to fall apart in front of her.
Sure, Paul might be a little bit shady and probably should serve the time that he deserves for killing a woman, but he seems like an angel compared to the deranged Felicia. I guess I don’t really care for either him or Felicia, but I like Beth more as a character as she starts to become more independent and refuses to let anyone boss her around anymore.
Since there weren’t any previews, I don’t know what to expect for the upcoming episode. I hope Keith proposes to Bree, but I’m also afraid that she’ll turn him down. She just got out of a messy divorce last season, and this relationship with Keith seems like just a little fling to her. Still, I hope it works out between them.
