She’s the Harajuku Barbie, Roman Zolanski, the Ninja, and last but not least, she’s Nicki Minaj. She’s been in the rap game for six years, and she’s finally making her debut on her first album “Pink Friday.”
The album is full of crazy, meaningful antics and stories that describe Minaj, which is interesting. Some of my favorite songs on the album have been already played on the radio: “Right Thru Me,” “Your Love,” and “Check It Out.” However, there are other songs that have caught my eye like “Roman’s Revenge,” featuring Eminem.
The song criticizes 90s hit female rapper Lil’ Kim. Upon listening to it closely, that’s exactly what it sounds like.
“Roman’s Revenge” has caused a feud to spark between the two, but it’s not the first time Minaj has been called out for her arrogance. She was also accused of starting problems with another female rapper by the name of Foxy Brown, which is still taking place. All three of these women just feel the need to keep taking stabs at each other that just aren’t necessary.
In addition, the song “Save Me” is another song that caught my attention.
Minaj seemed to show a more emotional side and was not merely throwing random words together that worked rhythmically, which rappers are commonly known for.
The song also has a small clip of a show that you might remember watching as a kid: “The Powerpuff Girls.” When I heard that, I wanted to listen to the rest of it, to see what she was going to put along with that. The elements incorporated in music these days amaze me.
While I did not care for the beat, the lyrics were meaningful in the song “Dear Old Nicki.” In this song, Minaj talks about how she used to be and how she has changed her ways and has developed a different perspective over time.
Before the album even dropped, I had heard Minaj say that she had toned down her provocative language on this album. I beg to differ.
Although some of the beats are enticing, the lyrics are not as pleasing to the ears. However, compared to other songs she has put out on her mixtapes in the past, this album is practically PG.
Some other artists that appear on the album include British singer Natasha Bedingfield and Rihanna.
Lil’ Wayne’s name was nowhere to be found, but that’s not a surprise. Jail time does have an effect on your life, folks. But, I guess you could say Drake held down his spot with a little writing and some vocals on the album here and there.
With that in mind, I say if you think you can handle the pink haired, multi- personality female rapper, take a listen.
I wouldn’t say that this album lives up to all the hype, but if you’re feeling a little pale and yellow, put some pink into your life with some Nicki Minaj.
