2010 has been an incredible year for music junkies like myself. Just the other day, out of pure curiosity, I decided to Google the best songs of 2010. I was completely astonished when the lists I found matched up with my own personal list. As I sat bewildered trying to figure out why the lists matched up, I asked myself, “Has the world finally caught up with me?”
I’m not a huge fan of rap music, but my list unmistakably began with “Love the Way You Lie” by Eminem. The song’s powerful beats and questionable lyrics combine to create one of the most influential songs of 2010. The song has even been nominated for a Grammy for “Song of the Year.”
Another one of my favorite songs from 2010 “Giving Up the Gun” comes from one of the most talented bands of the year, Vampire Weekend. The song not only summarizes the band’s popularity during this past year but also provides the perfect tune for amazing music video, which featured celebrities such as Jake Gyllenhaal and Joe Jonas.
While most would understand why “Love the Way You Lie” and “Giving up the Gun” made my list, some would be surprised to find “Everlasting Light” by The Black Keys on it. The song may have not engraved itself on the year’s pop culture, but it truly epitomizes the talent of The Black Keys.
“Afraid of Everyone” by The National played on my iPod months before it was featured on the current season of “Gossip Girl.” Being featured on “Gossip Girl” is reason enough to be one of the best songs of 2010.
Matt and Kim, one of the best pop duos of the year, also made the mark with the song “Good for Great.” Although the duo released the song in November, it still holds a spot on this list with its energetic beats and meaningful lyrics.
This would be no list without Kanye West. It is undeniable that the man has talent, and “Power” is the definition of that talent. The mix between rap and vocals creates a combination which makes the song one of the best of 2010.
My list continues with “Little Lion Man” by Mumford and Sons. This song catapulted Mumford and Sons to popularity this year. It not only belongs on my list because of its popularity but because of its memorable lyrics and marvelous beats.
My list ends with one of the most popular songs of the whole year, “Billionaire” by Travis McCoy featuring Bruno Mars and skyrocketing his career. The lyrics and acoustic beats inspire even the most unlikely to sing along.
These are the select few songs that truly rocked 2010. Now, let’s see if 2011 will deliver even better hits.
