I think my “Pretty Little Liars” obsession just got a bit unhealthier. Anyone else feel the same way?
All week, in interviews with cast members Troian Bellisario (Spencer), Shay Mitchell (Emily), Ashley Benson (Hannah), and Lucy Hale (Aria), the actors promised that the season one finale, which aired on Monday, Mar. 21 would not disappoint. It didn’t.
While we finally got some answers we were desperately searching for, there are so many questions that will be looming come June 14. Let’s take a look back through the season at each of the four girls’ situations.
Spencer: Spencer has probably gone through the most this half season. Mainly, she’s dealt with her sister marrying a could-be murderer and super creep Ian, getting the tables turned on her and getting framed for Ali’s murder, and then having “A” chime in and helping her out (or possibly hurting her) with her violent brother-in-law.
But what I love about Spencer is that through the twists and turns of the plot, she is still able to keep her sanity, use her brain, and find happiness with Toby. I can only hope they can make it past the drama surrounding their families in order to be together.
Spencer was smart to call Emily while she and Ian shared their vicious moment atop the bell tower. Could that be enough for Spencer to finally convince Melissa and her family that she’s not crazy and that Ian is the dangerous person in their situation? Is Ian even alive? If so, where will the future of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas lead? Are Melissa and her baby okay? Where will Spencer and Toby go from here?
Aria: While I am an avid Ezra supporter, the whole hiding out in Ezra’s apartment for every date thing was getting old. I’m glad that Ezra took the Hollis job because it shows he wants to be able to take Aria out and love her without any worries over moral or legal terms. But while they have survived all the close calls from her parents and police, Ezria is definitely starting her trek downhill by a least expected means: Ezra’s ex-fiancé Jackie Molina.
Though the scene when Aria leaves Ezra coldly in her room at the faculty mixer is heartbreaking, I think and hope Aria can come around to forgiving him. But seriously Ezra, you took the job at Hollis knowing Jackie works there? Shame, shame. I hope you can revive yourself. Hopefully this transitional period in their relationship will be a positive one in which they come out together and happy.
Still, questions remain. Will Jackie miraculously fall back into Ezra’s life? Will Ezra be seen as a problem if they start dating openly? How will Aria’s parents view their relationship? Especially if they find out this has been an ongoing thing.
Hannah: At this point, perhaps Hannah’s biggest problem is being Mona’s friend. All season, Mona acts like she’s there to help out Hannah when really she’s destroying her relationships. Hannah and Caleb need to work out their differences without any intervention and finally be together. After getting hit by a car, being forced to surrender to the cruel demands of “A” and getting her heart broken, she deserves to be happy.
But can it be that simple? Is Lucas really the nice guy we think he is to help out Hannah or is he just wanting Hannah for himself? Will Hannah realize that Mona is only hurting her? Is Mona more involved than we think? Will Hannah and Caleb get back to the way they were?
Emily: Emily seems to be a bit of a player these days. First, she and Maya begin a steady relationship, then Paige comes along, and now she’s emailing Samarra while smiling and blushing. But when she’s finally starting to settle down and feel comfortable in her own skin in Rosewood, her mother tries to pull out the rug by posing that they move to Texas for a year for her father’s military assignment. I hope Emily doesn’t move away!
But what if she does? Will Maya come back to Rosewood as Emily leaves? If Emily doesn’t move away, how will she react if Maya comes back to Rosewood when Emily has created new relationships? Will Emily’s mother ever accept her for who she is?
Ah, so many questions! But with all that said, what really shocked me is when Ian tried to convince Spencer that he killed Alison by accident. However, I don’t think this is the case. While Ian was trying to finish off Spencer in the bell tower, he oddly said that Alison fell by accident and died. Spencer shot back, correcting him by saying that Alison was strangled. Uh, hello?!
My theory: Melissa is Alison’s killer, Ian is possibly an accomplice, and “A” is neither of them. I want to believe that Jenna is “A,” but maybe she’s just an accomplice in murder, too. And also, though it may have just been “A” messing with the girls once again, I’m having a hard time believing that Ian is dead.
I’m hoping we can all expect an exciting second season, and further seasons to come. I know I’ll be impatiently waiting for June! 12 weeks and counting!
