90 minutes. Not 60 minutes. 90 minutes.
For anyone who watched any show on Fox for the past couple of weeks, this is that was heard during every commercial break as the network advertised the latest Glee.
Yes, Glee was back this last Tuesday, April 26, with an all-new 90-minute episode. Glee gave a second tribute to Lady Gaga and even named the episode after the artist’s newest hit single “Born This Way.” While it wasn’t as Gaga-filled as the previous episode, she was still honored throughout the episode.
Unlike the previous episode, there was more of a wide range of songs. They didn’t cover all of Lady Gaga’s songs but instead covered a very unpredictable list of artists. Do Duck Sauce, Sammy Davis Jr., Keane, West Side Story, and TLC fit together at all? Lady Gaga wasn’t the common factor either, as she was not the primary focus of the episode.
The primary focus of the episode was for people to not be afraid to be who they are, and to not change the way they are in order to fit in. This is where Lady Gaga came in. “Born This Way” fit in perfectly with the theme of the episode.
However, 90 minutes was a little much. They should save their longer episodes closer toward the end of the season, such as the final episode where they go to Nationals.
The highlight of the episode was when Kurt came back to the original Glee club. He decided that his bully problem was better now and that he could handle it. However, it was a little suspicious that right after the Warblers lost at Sectionals, he decided to come back and reunite with his original Glee club to compete at Nationals.
Another great part of the show was when the Warblers came to say goodbye to Kurt. He and the rest of the Warblers sang “Somewhere Only We Know,” and they nailed it. Other songs of the episode were Sammy Davis Jr.’s “I’ve Gotta Be Me,” Duck Sauce’s “Barbra Streisand,” and a mash-up of West Side’s Story’s “I Feel Pretty” and TLC’s “Unpretty.”
The flash mob to Duck Sauce’s Barbra Streisand in the middle of a mall was also a highlight of the episode. A flash mob seemed inevitable, as it seems to be the latest rage in television.
One thing that the episode was missing was Sue. She was nowhere to be found in any part of the episode, and it was not complete without her plotting for revenge against the Glee club.
Another thing that the episode was missing was more from the Warblers, which seems to be a direct result of Kurt’s return. One of the best things in the second season has been the Warblers. They are so talented, and they deserve to have a larger part in the show.
Overall, last Tuesday’s episode of Glee was average. The songs were very good and really well done, but it did not need to be as long as it was. Ninety minutes was just unnecessary.
