Perfectly casted, pleasingly scandalous, and charmingly funny with a happy ending all rolled into one, “Something Borrowed” is something worth seeing.
The movie opened with Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin), a successful but lonely New York lawyer, arriving at her surprise 30th birthday party, thrown by her obnoxious, attention-loving best friend and bride-to-be Darcy (Kate Hudson). While Rachel is always the passive friend to Darcy, she somehow wakes up the next morning alongside the love of her life, lawyer and hottie Dex (Colin Egglesfield). Dex also happens to be Darcy’s fiancé, despite the fact that Rachel and Dex both secretly liked each other in law school.
After the awkward morning realization of the done deed, Rachel and Dex find themselves in the pickle of a lifetime.
As Darcy and Dex ‘s wedding approaches, the secret lovers keep their affair private as side plots and characters bring extra drama and humor to the table. Rachel’s friend and moral anchor, Ethan (John Krasinski), tries to put her on the right path while battling a stage-five clinger, Claire (Ashley Williams), and secret crush of his own on Rachel.
Meanwhile, Dex’s friend, Marcus (Steve Howey), tries to get Rachel’s attention. However, Rachel can’t get her mind off of Dex, and he can’t seem to get his mind off of her either.
Finally, with a twisting plot, Dex and Rachel are forced to decide their future as the wedding day quickly approaches. Minor characters surface to impact the rather surprising ending, which I won’t divulge.
Even though it may sound like a typical cheap rom-com from the previews, the outstanding performances by Goodwin, Hudson, and Krasinski notch “Something Borrowed” high above the sappy and predictable love stories. Hudson’s character was contemptible enough to make Goodwin and Egglesfield even more lovable, yet she still had a charm that was able to shine through. Comedic performances from Krasinski and Howey gave the audience nice comic relief from the drama without being disconnected from the plot.
Not to mention the casting director gave the audience plenty of eye candy with Krasinski’s lovable and hilarious character, Ethan, and Egglesfield’s character, Dex. A guy that’s hot, smart, successful, and sensitive? They just don’t make them like that anymore.
Overall, “Something Borrowed” brings a cute and funny romance with a twist to the big screen that’s worth a trip to the movies, or at least a rent.
