Summer movies flopped instead of popped

Box office sales went down 25 percent compared to 2013’s summer income, according to Forbes. It was a bad summer for the film industry. This summer, producers were only able to come up with a couple of good movies. Overall, they were a disappointment.

The Worst of the Worst:

“Lucy”

“Lucy” was an hour and a half of a major headache. The movie is based off the myth that humans only use 10 percent of their brains. The “magical powers” that Lucy attain throughout the movie look fascinating on screen but make no sense at all.  Although Scarlett Johansson plays Lucy well, her performance cannot compensate for the mess of the movie. The movie is missing a set plot and it just falls apart. The movie had potential, but it fell short in the rankings of summer films.

“Tammy”

Whose idea was it to give Melissa McCarthy a lead role? She should definitely stick to being a sidekick. The previews for “Tammy” completely laid out the direction of the movie: the junk yard. The writers, including the director Ben Falcone who is McCarthy’s husband, of the movie were lazy and ultimately failed to create an interesting plot. Long story short, Tammy, played by McCarthy, decides to go on a road trip after she loses her job and her husband cheats on her. It was supposed to be a comedic movie, yet it was only agonizing. It was hard to resist walking out in the middle of the movie. Don’t waste your time or money buying the DVD.

The Best:

“The Guardians of the Galaxy”

Marvel hit the jackpot with “The Guardians of the Galaxy.” The movie effortlessly balances comedic value with an easy-to-follow plot, making it enjoyable for any movie goer. In the movie, Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt, and a group of misfits go on an action-packed adventure across the galaxy. Every aspect of this movie, especially the plot and the characters, easily makes it the best movie of the summer, if not the year. The movie was released on Aug. 1, and theaters are still selling tickets for almost every showing. If you have not seen this movie, you definitely should go see it before the theaters lose it.

“22 Jump Street”

Sony Pictures took the plot and casting of “21 Jump Street,” changed it just a little bit, and out came “22 Jump Street.” Somehow it turned out to be pure brilliance. The movie had a lot to live up to, but it was able to go above and beyond its predecessor. What makes the movie work so well is the harmony between Jenko and Schmidt, played by Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, respectively. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Sony Pictures releases a “23 Jump Street.”

It’s not over:

With the rest of 2014 to look forward to, several upcoming movies are notable and promise a worthy outcome. The best movies come out around the holidays and, hopefully, movie producers will be able to redeem themselves from the previous failures.

“Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb”

Release date: Dec. 19

“Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,” the third movie of its series, will attract a crowd, but its plot line and story might turn out to be a little worn. Due to the recent death of Robin Williams, who played Teddy Roosevelt, the movie’s turnout will surely increase in tribute to the comedic legend.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1”

Release date: Nov. 21

It has been a year since “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” was released. The suspense is building for the release of the third movie, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1,” from the book trilogy. The movie series has gathered a fan base from fans of the books and those who have started following because of the excitement.  The trailers preview a movie that seems to keep up with the standards of the previous ones. This is a must-see movie.

“Big Hero 6”

Release date: Nov. 7

One of the things that this summer was missing was Disney movies. “Big Hero 6” is predicted to be the next big Disney movie since “Frozen.” Walt Disney Animation Studios teamed up with Marvel to create this superhero comedy film about an inflatable robot, named Baymax, and his creator, Hiro Hamada. The adorable characters and exciting plot are sure to bring in audiences of all ages.
