TV Talk: “How to Get Away with Murder”
Members of the Patriot staff review various TV shows.
Few shows draw in and entertain viewers as well as ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder.” The show easily captivates audiences with a suspense-filled plot and incredible actors such as Viola Davis, the first African-American woman to ever win an Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The show has been added to Netflix and is currently in its second season, making it the best show on television right now.
The show focuses on law professor and defense attorney Annalise Keating (Davis) and five of her law students whom she awards internships. The students get entangled in Keating’s world and help her take on a murder case that has personal effects on Keating and all the students. The details of this murder are revealed throughout the season in flashbacks.Towards the end of the season, we find out who actually committed the murder, and Keating and the students attempt to bring the killer to justice.
While some would argue that following six lead characters, one major murder investigation, and multiple trials leads to a convoluted plot, I would highly disagree. The show focuses on the personal lives of the main characters, but the individual plots are clearly separated from each other. Also, the individual plotlines are reinforced by the uniqueness of each main character’s personal life and the different situations they each encounter.
As cliche as it sounds, Davis’s acting skills made me laugh one minute, then cry the next. In a matter of seconds, Davis can silently sob behind closed doors then flip a switch and deliver a snappy one-liner. She has the ability to show human emotions as they actually happen in real life, instead of the glossy Hollywood interpretation of feelings.
For those of us who choose what shows to watch based on the actors, I have another reason for you to watch “How to Get Away With Murder.” Alfred Enoch, who played Dean Thomas in the ‘Harry Potter’ movie series, and Matt McGorry, who plays Officer John Bennett on ‘Orange is the New Black,’ play major roles as law students Wes Gibbins and Asher Millstone, respectively.
Besides the incredible actors, the show’s suspense-filled plot keeps fans guessing and continually surprises them. I love to watch shows and try to guess who committed the crime or predict what will happen. No matter how hard I examine plot clues or what theory or suspect I come up with, ‘How to Get Away With Murder’ finds a way to completely surprise me.
While other legal dramas like “Law & Order” or “Suits” are good, they’re not as relatable as How to Get Away with Murder. Since the show focuses on students, it covers relatable issues like how to balance school and outside activities and relationships in a way that is unlike other legal shows: from a college student’s perspective. Additionally, the show isn’t overly dramatic or have intense theme m
Netflix recently added ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ to their TV show selection, so if you have some free time this week – or even if you don’t – go watch it. Once you get to season two, ABC has all the episodes from the second season online for free. Once you catch up, you can watch it live on ABC at 10 p.m. on Thursdays. Trust me, it’s a show to die for.
