Finding the best Netflix Original for you
If you’re looking for shows or movies to stream instantly, Netflix has a large selection of original productions for every genre. Here’s a list of Netflix Originals for the sci-fi fan, the comedy lover, the documentary lover, and anyone who loves a feel-good movie.
For the sci-fi lover – “Stranger Things”
This eerie and secretive show is great for any mystery-lover in need of a quick show to binge-watch in a week. The intricate plot has several hidden mysteries that will hold your attention throughout each episode. “Stranger Things” is about a young boy who was abducted and taken to a parallel universe called the Upside Down. Only the government knows about the Upside Down, and they have been keeping it a secret for years. Throughout the show, the mother constantly struggles as she tries to get to the bottom of her son’s kidnapping. Not only does the show do a great job keeping viewers entertained, but it also has amazing graphics and special effects. The hour-long episodes make it easy for the plot to be drawn out for several episodes, and it is not until the very last two episodes that you really see a clear conclusion to the season.
The comedy lover – “Haters Back Off”
YouTube star Miranda Sings now has her own Netflix show in which she mispronounces words with an overwhelming amount of red lipstick smeared over her lips. The show is about her trying to launch her YouTube career while living in a dysfunctional home. Although “Haters Back Off” doesn’t have a specific plot line, it jumps around from episode to episode discussing what’s new in Miranda’s life. The only consistent piece is that she is constantly trying to get publicity and fame for her atrocious singing. Since it lacks a strong plot line, it isn’t necessary to watch each episode to understand what is going on. All of Miranda’s interactions with other people are so awkward and uncomfortable that it makes the show a great comedy. “Haters Back Off” has really boosted Miranda’s career, and Netflix has already announced they will be releasing a second season later this year.
The comedy lover – “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”
This hilarious Netflix Original will be sure to put a smile on your face any day of the week. “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is about a 20-year-old girl named Kimmy Schmidt who was kidnapped as a kid and held underground in a bunker for 15 years. When Kimmy finally escapes, she decides she wants a fresh start outside of her small hometown and moves to the Big Apple. Although this sounds like a tragic event and a sad story line, it’s the complete opposite. She travels through New York City with a middle school education and quickly finds a place to live as well as a job. The writers do a phenomenal job adding humorous lines in every scene, meaning that there are hardly any scenes that are not filled with idiotic and absurd thoughts coming from Kimmy. In addition to the great writing, the actors do a fantastic job saying ridiculous comments in a nonchalant tone that makes the delivery even funnier. This is a quick show to watch and is perfect to start if you’re not looking for a long, drawn-out series.
Anyone who loves a feel good movie – “The Fundamentals of Caring”
This inspirational movie is the perfect blend between a happy, feel-good film and a comedy. The main character, Ben, is a retired writer looking for a new job and finds himself becoming a caregiver for Trevor, a 19-year-old disabled boy. They both have snarky attitudes and are always bickering back and forth, adding a touch of humor. Despite their quarreling, Ben and Trevor are unhappy with how their lives have turned out, and they sit together day-in and day-out watching a boring news show. One day they decide to revamp their lives and to embark on a road trip in hopes of finding happiness and pushing Trevor outside of his comfort zone. On their trip, they strengthen their relationship and become closer than ever as they joke constantly with each other. You can’t help but smile as you watch their relationship develop. Although the beginning starts off dreary and bland, it picks up after the first 20 minutes and turns into a cute movie. The whole concept is inspirational, and the directors did a fantastic job casting, as the actors are able to grasp their character’s personalities so well that they execute every scene flawlessly. “The Fundamentals of Caring” is a perfect pick-me-up type of movie for a night in.
The documentary lover – “13th”
“13th” is a Netflix documentary about the 13th Amendment and the abolishment of Jim Crow Laws in the 1800s and how it later resulted in prominent issues that still exist in today’s society. The documentary focuses on the prison boom of blacks and the astonishing statistics showing the quick growing imprisonment after the 13th Amendment was put into action. The whole documentary is saddening and disheartening due to the fact that issues such as the unjust treatment of blacks within crime is still evident in today’s society. By using true stories from modern day events, it puts into perspective how large of an issue the imprisonment of blacks is in today’s world. Although this is a very serious and depressing documentary, its content is powerful and is great for becoming more educated on such a controversial topic.
