Streaming Services Survey: Popular or Too Much?

There are a large number of streaming services available today. Previously, streaming services were much simpler: one service with all the favorite shows. Now streaming services have branched out to become much more complicated than ever before.

Well-known services such as Netflix, Hulu, and HBO have been out for a long time and include popular shows that many people know and love.

The inclusion of many new streaming services within the next six months may take away from or even defeat the purpose of subscribing to one streaming service where someone may watch many different shows.

Some major television networks are even creating their own streaming services and moving shows that originally aired on their own networks from a pre-existing service to their own service.

Netflix may lose some of their most popular shows such as “The Office” and “Friends” to NBC’s streaming service “Peacock” when that new service launches in April.

Many JC students think that there are too many streaming services, and the increase will have a negative effect.

Junior Robert Wilson said, “I think there are too many, and the competition between them doesn’t lower prices, so the advantage of paying for a streaming service instead of cable becomes null.”

Some students, however, still choose larger services like Netflix to be their main streaming service. 94% of the students surveyed said that they use Netflix.

Many new streaming services are still coming, despite the large number of already existing services.

Disney+ is one that some students are looking forward to next month, and Disney’s library is large. However, many students are not planning on subscribing to Disney+.

About 76% of students said that they do not plan on joining while 13% said they did plan to try Disney+.

Some students feel that Disney+ could be beneficial for them.

“There are going to be Star Wars and Marvel shows coming to Disney; plus all of the Disney movies are going to be taken off the other platforms and put onto this streaming service,” sophomore Anthony Golabiewski said.

With all the new streaming services available, just about anyone can find a service that will work well for them.
