Bo Burnham’s new special is not what you’d expect

Earlier this year, comedian Bo Burnham partnered with Netflix to release a special titled ‘Bo Burnham: Inside.’

Burnham himself directed, wrote, edited, and filmed this movie while in quarantine. His film won three Emmys as a result of his efforts.
Burnham started out posting content on YouTube in 2006. Since his rise to fame, he has released five comedy specials, five albums, and has been featured in sixteen different films and television shows.
This movie contrasts other works by Burnham. Inside touches on serious subjects that people may have experienced or felt during the COVID-19 shutdown.
The special is set up to continually switch from comedic bits to songs, usually with rough, choppy transitions. The songs don’t have a specific genre; some are silly while some are serious, and some are sad. This gives a sense of restlessness, supporting the original concept of feelings during quarantine.
This movie was extremely hyped up when it first came out, scoring 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, but I think it isn’t deserving. Burnham is very talented, but I had a hard time getting through his special although I do appreciate the mention of political issues.
The songs are catchy, so when you get them stuck in your head, you really start to think about the deeper meanings.
The song “That Funny Feeling” is a song written from the perspective of someone going through a confusing depression spiral. The song has a melancholy tune while the lyrics talk about random things on his mind. The chorus, which I think is the main root of the depressive vibe, is “Hey, what can you say? We were overdue. But it’ll be over soon. You wait.”
My favorite song from the special is “Welcome to the Internet.” This song is about the wonders of the World Wide Web and is very catchy. The lines, “Not very long ago. Just before your time. Right before the Towers fell, circa ‘99. This was catalogs. Travel blogs. A chat room or two. We set our sights and spent our nights. Waiting. For you, you, insatiable you. Mommy let you use her iPad, You were barely two” are my favorites solely because it puts in perspective how much the internet has grown since it first came out.
I would recommend this movie to people who are fans of comedic songs, or people who enjoy making light of serious topics.
