‘The Bling Ring’ combines pop culture and crime
September 30, 2021
With the recent resurgence of early 2000’s fashion and culture, many people have been looking for movies that encompass the vibe of the early 2000s.
The Bling Ring is the perfect movie for those who are interested in the early 2000s, fashion, celebrities, or true crime.
This unique combination of plots may not become everyone’s favorite, but they make an entertaining watch.
The Bling Ring is based on the true story of the Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch. The movie closely follows the true story, with some name changes and more dramatics.
The Bling Ring was directed by Sofia Coppola in 2013. The movie follows Marc, played by Israel Broussard, a new student at Indian Hills High School in Calabasas, California. We watch as he meets fame and pop culture obsessed Rebecca, played by Katie Chang, and her friend group of wealthy and affluent teens who spend their time partying and breaking into the homes of their favorite celebrities, including Lindsey Lohan and Orlando Bloom.
The film leaves you wondering how it could possibly be based on real life as you watch the teens research which celebrities are out of town, where they live, and how they can get into the homes — all with a quick Google search. At Paris Hilton’s house, they find her key under the doormat, and at Megan Fox’s house, one of the girl’s younger sisters squeezes through the dog door. The group isn’t very discreet about their pastimes, and raise suspicion among police when people come forward, claiming they heard the friends bragging about whose homes they’ve been to and what things they’ve taken.
The Bling Ring is full of suspense of whether the group will get caught or not, and how many more break-ins it will take before they face repercussions.
The movie features a broad cast of actors, like Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, and Paris Hilton (playing herself), as well as many lesser-known actors such as Katie Chang and Claire Julian.
This film is full of iconic lines, like Emma Watson’s character, Nicki, saying “I’m a firm believer in karma.” These lines mixed with the aesthetically-filmed montage scenes make the movie more enjoyable, despite some occasionally boring scenes.
The Bling Ring is available for streaming on Netflix.
