Farewell to 2022

Allison Coyne, Managing Editor

Throughout this year, amazing music and movies have been created. In the thousands of new songs and shows, a few stand out among the rest. These are my top releases of 2022.

Best Song: “Satellite” by Harry Styles
Harry Styles released his third album titled Harry’s House, on May 20. The eleventh track became my favorite song this year. The song beings with a beautiful introduction that is extremely captivating, before entering into the verses and lively chorus. The amazing drumbeat at the end really ties the song together. It is perfect for driving with the windows down and blasting music. No matter how many times I listen, it never gets old.

Best Album: Stick Season by Noah Kahan
While Noah Kahan’s new album has only been out for a few months, it has quickly risen to my top albums of all-time. The album has 14 songs and was released on October 14.
This has been my soundtrack for fall since it incorporates a lot of acoustic guitars and light vocals.

Each song bridges the gap between pop and folk music, creating a unique sound. My favorite songs on the album are “Everywhere, Everything,” “Growing Sideways,” and “Homesick.”

Best Movie: Where the Crawdads Sing
Based on the book, Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, this movie is both captivating and devastating. Following the life of Kya Clark, viewers are swept into a murder mystery, a romance, and a journey of self-discovery.

Each scene will leave you wanting to know what happens next, pulling on your heartstrings in the meantime. The movie also does a fantastic job of staying accurate to the book. If you enjoy the show Outer Banks, this movie is for you. While it was first released on July 15, it is now available to stream on Netflix.

Best Show: The Summer I Turned Pretty
The Summer I Turned Pretty is the show of the summer. Released on June 17, the show is a coming-of-age romance that is incredibly relatable. The soundtrack is one of the best I have ever heard, with each song perfectly matching each scene.

The show is an adaptation of the book written by Jenny Han. Despite the author having a major role in writing the show, the plots are very different, which I think is a good thing. This was one adaptation that was much better than the book itself.
