The expectation for new movies heightened as a very pink, vibrant movie came to theaters this past summer. The idea of the ‘Barbie’ movie featuring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie first became popular with the public when it was announced in 2019.
This movie successfully sold out in thousands of theaters on its release date in America. The movie’s success is no surprise given the exciting representation of Will Ferrell, Dua Lipa, John Cena, and Lizzo in addition to Billie Eilish’s new songs.
Large clothing brands like Forever 21, Gap, and Primark sponsored and supported the movie.
Barbie has had one of the most significant influences on the public going viral on multiple media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter. There’s never a dull moment in the film with dance battles, colorful clothing, and witty jokes on all ends.
However, under all the glitter and sparkles, there is a more profound message Greta Gerwig, the director of the movie, wished the audience noticed. The movie’s ultimate purpose was to open the world’s eyes to the inequality many women face daily.
The movie sends a strong message to all young girls that they can do anything they put their minds to. The rating I would give to this movie and the effect it has had on its audiences would be a nine out of ten.
The marketing and production of the movie got everyone excited and yearning for the movie’s opening day. My biggest takeaway from the movie was the strained relationship between the Kens and the Barbies.
The Kens in Barbieland represent women in today’s world — often overlooked and under-appreciated while the Barbies are expected to be perfect and happy all of the time, magnifying the unrealistic expectation that women need to be perfect all of the time.
Barbie will certainly go down in history as one of the most impactful movies for young girls everywhere.
It sets the new tone for upcoming films that having an underlying message that excites the viewers more.
In the future, I look forward to watching more movies like Barbie and hope to see just as amazing representation, and meaning.
Barbie can now be seen on Amazon Prime Video.
