Regal Cinemas got hit hard after a huge company bankruptcy. Many locations in Maryland have already closed.
The Regal Cinemas in Abingdon closed their doors on July 20. Another Regal in Columbia, Maryland, closed on July 26.
Cineworld, the company that owns Regal in the US, is a British cinema contractor. With over 9,000 screens in ten countries, they have become the second-largest cinema chain, AMC being the largest.
However, there was an eleven-month period when Cineworld was in bankruptcy.
Due to having over 9,000 screens in many different countries all over the world, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the lack of successful movies, Cineworld tacked on about $8.81 billion dollars’ worth of debt.
While over these past 11 months they have lowered some debt and cleaned the slate with a new management board, Cineworld needed another solution. This involved shutting down over 23 theaters, with plans to continue the closings.
In the 500 locations nationwide, 14 Regal Cinemas have already closed, and four in Maryland have already shut down, the closest to John Carroll being the Regal in Abingdon.
The Regal Cinema in Abingdon had been open since July 1997.
There are still some locations in Maryland open. The Hunt Valley, Laurel Town Center, and Waugh Chapel theaters will remain open as of now.
After 26 excellent, nostalgic, and memorable years, it was time to say goodbye to the beloved local Regal Cinema.
