‘White Christmas’ is a Christmas classic that everyone should watch. It is a 1954 American musical directed by Micheal Curtiz. and stars Bing Crosby who plays Bob Wallace and Danny Kaye who plays Phil Davis.
White Christmas begins with Bob and Phil in Europe at the height of World War II. Bombers attack the area that the men are in, causing a wall to collapse and almost killing Bob until Phil pulls him away. This saves his life.
Bob asks Phil what he can do to repay him, so Phil suggests they become a duo act. Bob is not fond of the idea, but he agrees.
After the war, the two make it big first as performers and then as producers. One night after performing, the men stay to watch an act of sisters Betty Haynes and Judy Haynes played by Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellan.
When Betty and Judy are finished performing, they meet Bob and Phil. Phil and Judy hit it off immediately although Bob and Betty argue over Bob’s skepticism.
After a series of events, the four decide to spend Christmas together in Pine Tree, Vermont where Betty and Judy are booked as performers.
Upon arrival, they find out all the guests have left due to no snow and warm weather. To their surprise, the landlord of the hotel is their old general, General Waverly.
He has put all of his life savings into the hotel and is on the verge of bankruptcy. Phil and Bob decide to stage a show to draw in guests; they also include Betty and Judy in the show.
Soon after, we see Betty and Bob’s romance starts to bloom. The movie continues with lots of twists and turns as the characters navigate love, friendships and careers.
White Christmas earned $12 million in theatrical rentals, making it the highest-grossing film of 1954. It was also the highest-grossing musical film at the time and ranks among the top 100 popular movies of all time.
In 1955, the movie was an Oscar nominee for Best Music, Original Song for “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep.”
