The iconic ‘Mean Girls’ movie of the 2010s has been remade into a musical version that was released on January 12, 2024.
The new movie follows the same plot as the original but with scenes that occasionally break the fourth wall, giving the movie a stronger Broadway element. The new movie even quotes some of the most iconic lines from the original that many know and love.
The plot is the same, following Catie Heron as she tries to navigate through her new high school.
As Catie meets certain clicks, she is convinced by her new friends to take down the popular girls of the school, “The Plastics.”
Following Catie’s story is like watching a fish out of water as she tries to understand the norms of her new school.
The movie even features popular actors like Chris Briney, who plays Aaron Samuels, known best for his role as Conrad Fisher in The Summer I Turned Pretty series. Another notable name is Reene Rapp, a singer-songwriter who plays Regina George.
Other members of The Plastics include Bebe Wood who plays Gretchen, and Avantika Vandanapu as Karen.
The new Mean Girls even features familiar faces including Tim Meadows, who plays Mr. Duvall, and Tina Fey, who plays Ms. Norbury.
One of the most notable returns is Lindsey Lohan as the mathlete’s moderator. This is significant and a nod toward the original movie, as Lohan played Catie Heron in the original.
The main thing that should be noted about the movie is the outfits that the characters wear throughout the movie. The outfits are too low quality for The Plastics. This is a very noticeable change from the original as The Plastics wore designer brands throughout the original movie.
The movie is overall underwhelming compared to the original. It lacks the same appeal that the original movie has.
Although some of the actors have very good musical numbers and strong performances, it just feels like a silly remake of the original.
The extreme media coverage of the new movie gave high expectations that fell short. However, if you enjoyed the original movie, you should still see the remake to enjoy a modernized version of the classic teen movie.
