A movie about true love, happiness, and fairy tale endings.
Now that’s an idea. But a movie about the complications of life after the story ends? That’s original.
“It’s Complicated” is the story of Jane Adler (Meryl Streep), a woman who, just when she thought she was finished with her ex-husband, Jake Adler (Alec Baldwin), is forced to deal with his return. And things get, well, complicated.
Jake seems to return at the worst possible time for Jane, who has just met someone who actually cares, Adam, played by the always funny Steve Martin.
When Jane’s life finally seems to be on track, Jake, whose marriage to his former mistress is not doing so well, wants to see if he has anything left with Jane.
The all-star cast was flawless. Streep never ceases to amaze me with her incredible ability to play just about every role she’s given. Baldwin’s dry sense of humor is always refreshing. Martin‘s funnyman-goofball act really shone through in the movie, especially in the scene where he and Streep channel just about every rock star from the 60s.
And, although his role is small compared to the others, John Krasinski kept me laughing the entire movie.
He, unlike his fiancée (the daughter of Jane and Jake), knows more about Jane and Jake’s relationship than he wants to. He always has his own commentary for all of the crazy shenanigans that Jane and Jake get into.
But despite the fantastic actors and hilarious dialogue, the plotline was average.
For the most part it was predictable, in the same way almost every romantic comedy is.
Although the actors tried very hard to bring something new to this very overdone genre, with a director like Nancy Meyers (“What Women Want,” ” Something’s Gotta Give,” “The Holiday”), you can’t really expect anything new to be brought to the table.
The movie was worth it, if only for the acting and a good laugh. However, unless you’re menopausal, don’t expect to be moved by the plot.
