The class of 2011 should be worried. The Senior Variety Show for the class of 2010 is going to be a tough act to follow.
The show had the perfect blend of handwritten skits, reenactments, and both serious and humorous musical performances.
It started off with a spoof of Taylor Swift’s SNL monologue, making fun of everything from the button campaign to the class of 2009.
The seniors quickly transitioned to their next target: the class of 2009. They had a skit where four boys dressed in extremely skimpy clothes, including fishnets and tube tops, and mimicked last year’s dance to “Voulez vous coucher avec moi.”
The most memorable skit was the teacher dance contest. The seniors danced onto the stage as various teachers, while a song representing the teacher’s personality played in the background. The winner was senior Scott McIntyre, dressed as history teacher Lawrence Couchman. He literally rode onto the stage on a motorized wheelchair to the song “Ridin’ Dirty.”
The seniors continued to prove their talents when senior Tyler Fritz sang “I’m proud to be a Harford Countian.” He sung about everything that makes Harford County unique, with lines such as, “I’m proud to be a Harford Countian, where I can’t park for free, and I won’t forget the officer who gave that ticket to me.”
Although the show had its fair share of funny melodies, it also showcased some serious talent with musical performances by seniors Erin Hanratty and Benny Clough.
Saratoga Syndicate, consisting of Benn Ayd, Vince Gruse, Hanratty, and Kurt Karolenko, gave an upbeat performance of Yellowcard’s “Ocean Avenue.” It was a nice break, giving the audience time to rest from laughing. Clough captivated the audience with his unique voice and played both the guitar and harmonica during his performance of “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright” by Bob Dylan.
The school had a JC Update, which replaced the “What if” segment from past variety shows. It was the only part of the show that started to cross the line and became more mean than funny when talking about the teachers.
Later on in the show, Gruse played the guitar as his “pet dolphin,” played by Fritz, made earsplitting dolphin noises. The senior girls dance was performed to a mix of Michael Jackson songs. Senior Chelsea Nori stole the show as the lead dancer. Her effortless dancing skills made the senior girls dance one that will be hard to make fun of in later variety shows.
When the show seemed like it could not get any better, the finale came. The lights were turned out, and Gruse and Ayd performed an unbelievable drum duet with glow in the dark drum sticks and shirts. When they stopped playing, all of the participating seniors flooded the stage wearing black clothes and loads of glow sticks. They threw the glow sticks into the audience while chanting, “Seniors Seniors!” and left the class of 2011 with some very large shoes to fill.
