Senior Katie O’Brien can be found in one of three places— on the softball field, running safaris around campus, or on the track.
O’Brien has been participating in cross country for three years and is just beginning her indoor track season this year. As for softball, she has been playing since she was a little kid.
“I’ve been playing for softball all my life. My dad got me into softball and I really liked it. He coached my rec team until high school, when I started playing club. I also played when I was in middle school for Harford Lutheran,” O’Brien said.
O’Brien plays club softball year-round as a catcher or as a first baseman with the Churchville Patriots, and her work does not stop there. She continues to improve her softball game with hitting lessons every week with another softball coach.
As for her cross country career, O’Brien began running after losing interest in playing soccer during her freshman year.
“My friend got me into and got me to try it [cross country]. I joined and I really liked it, everyone was nice and it’s a fun sport,” O’Brien said. “Most people that do cross country also do indoor track so it’s really nice.”
O’Brien’s proudest moment was achieving her best time of 22:22 in a race against St. Mary’s. This indoor track season she plans to participate in long distance running, such as the half mile, mile, or two mile runs.
As far as college, O’Brien is not too interested in continuing to run for the schools she is applying to.
“I don’t think I’ll make the team [at that school] because the schools that I’m applying to are Division One schools. I’ll probably join a club team for softball if they have one,” O’Brien said.
