For sophomore Yannick Frach, every day spent in America was a new experience. For the past six months, Frach has been away from the comforts of his home in Germany, spoken a different language, and lived in a foreign country.
From spending a day in New York City to learning how to use the tablets at school, Frach has loved practically every minute of his time spent in America.
“New York is the most amazing city I’ve ever seen. It’s much bigger than any town in Europe. You see it on TV, and then you see it in real life. It’s really cool,” Frach said.
As far as his experience at JC goes, Frach has enjoyed his time here, learning about the tools and activities available. “I was surprised at how much you use [the tablets]. At first, I thought, why don’t you just write it on paper and hand it in?” Frach said.
During Frach’s time abroad, he noted the differences between America and Germany.
“There is a lot of fast food, and everything is not nearby. You have to drive everywhere,” Frach said. Frach also witnessed how big everything is compared to Germany, especially the size of cities in comparison to Frach’s hometown in Germany.
Also, schools in Germany do not offer sports to their students. Instead, they have to go to outside clubs if they want to participate in a sport.
“I like that they have sports after school,” Frach said.
Frach also learned more about American culture and tradition. While he was here, he had the chance to celebrate his first Thanksgiving. “I really liked the turkey we had at Thanksgiving,” Frach said.
Coming to America has also changed Frach’s future educational plans. “I want to come back and study in the states. I also want to learn English more,” Frach said. Though Frach returned home after midterm week, he already plans on coming back next summer with his family on vacation.
“I like it here very much. I’ve made new friends and seen the American high school system. I made a good decision to come to the states and John Carroll. There’s not much I don’t like about America. I know a different culture now,” Frach said.
