Music industry inspires senior to take steps toward career

For senior Abby Carson, music has always been a part of her life, so when it came time to choose a Senior Project, it didn’t take long for her to figure out what she wanted to do.

“When I heard about Senior Project, I definitely was thinking it was just going to be another assignment and another chore that I would have to complete for senior year,” Abby said. “However, when I saw one of the options was choosing something in the category of a career exploration, it caught my eye.”

Recently, Abby had been struggling to figure out where she wants to attend college and what career she wants to pursue. However, the difficulties she has been going through has helped shape her idea for her project.

“I wanted it to be almost an excuse to dedicate a lot of time into a passion of mine, and I’ve always wanted to see myself later in life in the music industry.”

“My ultimate goal by the end of my senior project is to have created some sort of music that is completely my own,” Abby said.

It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that she realized she had the ability to make her own music. “I could now put all my emotions and all the things that I’m feeling into a song instead of keeping everything locked in my mind.”

Along with recording her own music, Abby will also be job shadowing at the WXCY radio station in Havre de Grace.

“This is going to be a really fun opportunity for me to understand a little bit more about background in the production of music, what kind of music attracts different types of people, and learn a lot about different aspects of music that I didn’t even know existed. It also will show me different job opportunities that might help me make my own music as well.

Along with shadowing at WXCY and writing her own music, Abby has also started contacting JC alumni who have also created some forms of music for their senior projects.

“It is helpful to me to talk to these individuals who I know have dedicated a portion of their life to music and [have] a better understanding of what I’m up against, along with a realistic aspect of how to make my own music.”

“I think the most important thing right now is that I really want this project to give me an idea of if I’m able to accomplish music as a career and the steps I would take to accomplish this passion that I have,” Abby said.
