During the last school year, JC introduced a new extracurricular activity to the list of 40+ clubs and organizations: Color Guard.
The goal of the Color Guard is to enhance the music of the marching band on a more visual level. Included with the music is the spinning of flags and props. These props include rifles and sabers.
Color Guard was a new addition last year for the Christmas parade and at the Josh Hamer Memorial game. This year they have expanded into home football games, parades, and a spring recital.
Not only has their performances grown in number but so has the team.
Color Guard Coach Nate Nocket commented, “We have students in every grade level who are involved in some degree. If they can’t do the fall, then they are welcome to join us for parades or our spring recital.”
Due to the versatility of the sport, they can stretch their expertise among all three sports seasons: fall, winter, and spring. This gives the team more flexibility for those involved.
The team practices twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“We go through the routines they have already learned and work to perfect them. We spend time cleaning work so it looks crisp and that everyone is spinning on the same counts. Sometimes we clean out the closet or have organization meetings on what is coming up,” explained Mr. Nocket.
Sophomore Caroline Holmes, a member of the team commented, “There’s just something about the mood of both the players and the crowd after the halftime show. I feel like Color Guard helps boost our team’s zeal and morale. The events we go to and the outfits and flags we get to use are really fun.”
