Although the debate of when to begin celebrating Christmas still stands, local churches begin their annual Christmas bazaars and festivals early in the season. These festive events are a staple in many people’s families, whether they run a table or are consumers; the experience is memorable.
Annual Christmas bazaars consist of tables filled with homemade crafts and collectibles, antiques, baked goods, essentially every holiday-themed item.
Usually there is a “North Pole” section for the kids with face painting, arts and crafts, and pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, which are truly amazing family experiences and something for kids to enjoy during the holiday season.
Many people make things to contribute to these events. Knit goods, themed ornaments, gift baskets, personalized items, and other items are sold. Tables are filled with antique holiday decorations and home décor. Most popular is usually the baked good table with amazing home-baked pies, cookies, cakes, all made with the Christmas spirit.
The tables filled with personalized goods usually are themed toward popular football teams or favorite dog breeds to catch the eye of shoppers.
The items are almost irresistible since they hold personal meaning. My own family has purchased many items with the breed of our family’s dog on it such as ornaments and even handmade shadowboxes themed to our chocolate Labrador.
These items are never necessary but are always purchased because of their meaning.
Handmade knit items are very popular and cater to the season. Scarves, hats, and gloves are often made since they are more likely to be bought during the winter season. If you are in need of anything that could pertain to cold weather or the holidays, Christmas bazaars are where to go.
A majority of the Christmas bazaars take place on the first Saturday in December. The Saint Ignatius Catholic Church in Hickory’s Christmas Bazaar is held this day as well as the Saint Margaret Church’s Christmas festival/tree lighting. Events like these take place at almost every church you see during the Christmas season.
Due to the popularity and interest from families, these events tend to get very busy. Parking can become an issue, especially at smaller churches. Be sure to get there early so you have access to good parking and a wide selection of goods, as things seem to sell out fairly quickly.
Overall, Church Christmas Bazaars are a great way to kick off the holiday season in preparation for Christmas. This is an amazing family experience that gets everyone in the Christmas spirit.
