Alumna Amanda Reid returned to John Carroll as a Spanish teacher during the week following Winter Break.
After graduating from John Carroll in 2014, Ms. Reid attended Towson University where she studied Spanish and International Studies. While in college, she spent a year abroad in Spain and a summer in Brazil.
Ms. Reid found her passion for teaching when she taught high school English in Spain. She taught at schools in both Palma de Mallorca and Murcia, Spain. Most recently, she taught Spanish for three and a half years at Swan Creek in Aberdeen.
Ms. Reid came back to JC for many reasons, but, most importantly, to bring back the Spanish exchange program. “Where I was teaching in the public school system, I wasn’t able to provide the same opportunities that I can here. I want to bring back the foreign exchange in Spain. I wouldn’t have the career I have without doing the exchange myself. That was one of the main reasons why I wanted to come back.”
“I think you can have a lot of fun teaching language, and I think what I enjoy the most about it is seeing the light bulb go off once everyone connects things. That there is a lot to learn about culture as you are learning a language, and I like being able to tie the two together,” said Ms. Reid.
World Language Chairman Cathy Edge said, “Having a new member of the World Language department allows some of the current teachers to spread their wings and get involved in other programs in the school. As professionals, we always like to grow and learn new things. Ms. Reid is a magnificent teacher. She is enthusiastic and creative and seeks to develop authentic and enduring relationships with her students.”
Mrs. Edge continued, “Her experience as a John Carroll student allows her to understand her students in the classroom in a unique way. We are very fortunate to have her become a member of our faculty, and I anticipate she will do great things in the future at John Carroll.”
Ms. Reid is most excited about getting to know the students and the staff and making connections. “John Carroll was great for that when I was here, so I’m excited to see the other side of that now.”
