Going back to the 1990s, boy bands, hip hop, and old rock were at their height. Game Boys were popular, and flannel shirts and baggy jeans were in style. New technology included cell phones and DVDs, and entertainment included the releases of ‘Titanic’ and ‘The Lion King’ as well as TV shows like ‘Friends’ and ‘The Simpsons.’
Assistant Principals Danica Attanasio and Jake Hollin and Director of Admissions Edward Maynard attended John Carroll in the ‘90s. Mrs. Attanasio graduated in ‘97, Mr. Hollin in ‘92, and Mr. Maynard in ‘93.
Looking back at some of the differences between today and the ‘90s, Mr. Maynard commented, “For starters, the uniform is completely different. I don’t think the girls would want to wear what was worn in the ‘90s.”
Mr. Hollin mentioned that before the school colors were black and gold, they were brown and gold.”
Mrs. Attanasio said they used desktop computers during her time at JC as a student and mentioned how one of the current science labs JC used to be a language lab. There was no Lower Gym and no Fine Arts Wing.
Additionally, there were religious priests and nuns who worked and served at the school.
Mr. Hollin said one similarity between today and the ‘90s is that the teachers were accepting and understanding, but now they are more so. “Even back then, there was a great sense of community.”
Mr. Hollin said if there’s something he would want to bring back from the ‘90s, it would be the teachers he had when he went to John Carroll, so today’s students could meet them.
Regarding what he would want to bring back from the 1990s, Mr. Maynard said, “It was totally confusing, but I really liked the bell schedule.”
Mrs. Attanasio participated on the swim team for all four years and on the soccer team for two years during her time at JC. Additionally, she was on The Patriot staff as the editor-in-chief and in the band. She said that she did not know she was going to come back to JC until later in college when she decided to become a teacher. She said she loved her time at JC, and some of her strongest friendships came from the school.
Mr. Hollin was in student government, band, football, wrestling, baseball, and a number of service groups during his time at JC. He met his wife while at JC and still has some friends that he made. He also did not expect he would end up working at JC.
Mr. Maynard played soccer and lacrosse and was on the swimming/diving team for two years as well. He was a member of the Spanish Honors Society, Heritage Club, and a student ambassador. “I really enjoyed my time here. As with any high school experience at any school, there were ups and downs, but I cherish my time spent here.”
