In mid-February, Lisa Still joined the JC staff. She began teaching Health and Wellness along with Food and Nutrition.
Mrs. Still graduated from Towson University and received a degree in Community Health Education. A few years later she returned to Towson University and got a school health degree.
In her junior year at C. Milton Wright, the last thing she wanted to be was a teacher.
After deciding she wanted to look into the career just to view all her options, she did an observation in a classroom, and her opinion flipped. She decided to long-term sub and loved it.
She pursued her passion and “took my teaching classes and long-term subbed at multiple different schools.”
She said her passion for food and health came from a period when she was home with her three kids, Liam, Payton, and Christian. “I incorporated different things like doing fitness and nutrition stuff with my family members. I always liked to help people with their nutrition because it’s a beneficial and vital part of their wellness.”
Mrs. Still loves teaching about nutrition. “I like to give practical tips and tricks to see if a food is good for you and what it does to your body. I like to inform people about certain nutrients and if they don’t get them how it could impact them.”
Mrs. Still said an important factor in health is the Wellness Wheel. It incorporates physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, social, and financial aspects of health.
She said, “Making sure you focus on all of these is a key takeaway of health.”
If she could teach any other course, she said she would teach wellness walking, yoga, or a meditation class.
Another course she would love to teach would be first aid and CPR. “If I could teach people how to get first aid certified in school I would.”
She previously long-term subbed at Milford Mill and a technical high school. She then moved onto student teaching at Fallston High School and after that returned to C. Milton Wright, her alma mater. Her last job before John Carroll was teaching at Edgewood Middle School for five years.
Mrs. Still chose John Carroll due to the closeness of her farm in Harford County where she lives with her husband and children. She was searching for a while and she “randomly looked and there happened to be an opening for a health teacher.”
One of Mrs. Stills’s first impressions of JC was that the staff was nice. One thing that stood out to her was that during her initial interview, she learned that the principal and assistant principals all teach classes.
She respected this because “in public schools, principals often didn’t understand what teachers were going through in the classroom.”
Mrs. Still is still continuously impressed by the staff and students at John Carroll. She feels she can trust the students to be responsible young adults, which helps students prepare for the future.
She also enjoys the events that happen at JC, such as Ash Wednesday Mass, the Black History Month Assembly, and the Holocaust Remembrance Day. “These were all meaningful and thought out, and I truly am blessed to be a part of this community.”
On the side, Mrs. Still coaches lacrosse and does individual training. Mrs. Still enjoys DIY projects for around her farmhouse, gardening, watching football and basketball, listening to music, and making healthy recipes. She also loves hiking and going on adventures with her family.
Her goal for this year is to help students be healthier. “If I could make a difference in even just a few people’s lives, that’s my goal.”
