Most students tend to underestimate the lives of their teachers. So, it’s time that we go more in-depth inside a teacher’s life. That teacher is Judy Potter. Potter, the current German teacher, has been teaching at John Carroll for 24 years. Aside from teaching German, she also teaches piano lessons outside of the walls of JC.
Unfortunately, Potter has decided to retire after the conclusion of next year, which will be her 25th year of teaching at JC. Potter has many hobbies besides grading papers and helping her students expand their knowledge of a different language and culture. “In my spare time I enjoy riding horses, gardening, and reading,” Potter said.
She was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania and moved to Maryland right before teaching at JC. “I’ve lived in Maryland for over 30 years and consider it my home,” Potter said. Potter majored in German because of her Austrian heritage, and teaching seemed to be the best option for her career.
“My favorite thing about JC is the caring atmosphere among faculty and students,” Potter said. Potter’s hard work and dedication towards her students has paid off. “Frau definitely knows how to make the class fun and educational,” sophomore Rebecca Toskes, said.
“When I leave John Carroll, I will miss the friends I have made and my interaction with young people the most,” Potter said. “Frau Potter has a very good learning style and I feel like I have picked up German very quickly thanks to her. I’ll miss her next year,” senior Jess Crawford said. Crawford began German her junior year and appreciates the time Potter has put into her class.
