No matter what happened, sophomore Megan Greig wasn’t saying a word. She chose to take part in the Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity on Oct. 19 with the Respect Life Club. The Day of Silence, a protest against abortion, entailed wearing a red ribbon or piece of tape as the Respect Life Club went without speaking for a day for aborted babies who will never have a voice.
“I had people come up to me and tell me what I was doing was stupid. That was the most difficult thing, you couldn’t fight back,” Greig said.
According to senior and President of the Respect Life Club Nick Henninger, about 30 people participated. “I think it achieved our goal of raising awareness about abortion victims at JC,” Henninger said.
Even pro-choice students like senior Alex Burdeshaw saw the positive aspects of the demonstration. “I think it showed guts. They were standing up for what they believed in very publically,” Burdeshaw said.
However, some students didn’t think very highly of the students that participated. “While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I felt as though people were taking it to an extreme to satisfy their self-righteousness,” junior Joe Novak said.
Junior Alexa Dipeso, who did participate, also had complaints about the day. “I think that some people were doing it without being respectful. They were just making fun of the people doing it seriously,” Dipeso said.
Regardless of criticisms participant sophomore Travis Nelson considers the day a success. “I thought it was an interesting experience. People really got the message that we were trying to spread,” Nelson said.
