The Escorial, a monastery palace, is built entirely out of granite. No pictures were allowed inside the Escorial, but the tour of the palace featured the king's living quarters as well as a chapel that was so big it could've been its own stand-alone building.
The Escorial also features a mausoleum for the royal family. The main crypt holds Spanish kings and mothers of kings, but other rooms hold other members of the family. There's even a room dedicated to children under seven years old.
On Jan. 30, the Spanish Exchange took an excursion to see the monastery palace Escorial, the Valley of the Fallen, and the Alcazar in Segovia.
When we arrived in Segovia, it was pouring. The Alcazar was a favorite residence of the Crown of Castile in the Middle Ages, a kingdom that would later become Spain. It was the palace of Ferdinand and Isabella who commissioned Christopher Columbus 1492 voyage.
