The Russian 3 class went on a field trip to the Katyn Memorial in downtown Baltimore on May 16 to further educate the class on their knowledge about Russian history.
According to Russian teacher Ed Miller, Russian students do not only learn about the Russian language but also about Russia’s culture. Before going, it was required for each student to write a report about the Katyn Massacre so that they would be able to understand the people and the history behind the Memorial.
“There is still so much to be learned about World War II and our relations with Russia,” Miller said.
The Katyn Memorial is the largest memorial in Maryland and the US and represents the horror that went on during the Katyn Massacre in 1940.
During World War II, Germany and Russia invaded Poland. Russia’s hope was to control Poland and convert its people. The Polish were taken to the Katyn Forest by Russian soldiers and killed from behind.
“It was a great experience getting to see what we have been learning about,” junior Caitlin Campbell said.
After visiting the monument, the class took a trip to Little Italy and ate at Sabatino’s, an Italian restaurant.
“Lunch at Sabatino’s is always interesting to visit,” Miller said. “One of Baltimore’s ethnic treasures.”
