Speech and Debate team succeeds in meet

The Speech and Debate team competed at JC on Jan. 9, and won 13 ribbons and nine first place finishes in the meet against other Harford County Speech and Debate teams.

According to senior captain Casey Reil, “We did very well. It was a very good meet, and we placed in every category we entered in.” This is the first time the team has accomplished that feat this year.

One standout performance that Reil saw was the original oratory competition where the team placed first, second, and third. Reil also found senior Lily Liu’s performance to be very good.

“[Liu] did children’s literature and read a story in English and read it again in Chinese,” Reil said.

Senior captain Margaret McGuirk found junior Annalee Gabler’s performance impressive. “[Gabler] got a perfect score in dramatic interpretation,” McGuirk said.

According to Reil, “overall, it has been a very successful year for us. We have been helping new people and hope to continue it next year.”

The next meet will take place on Feb. 13 at Joppatowne High School.
