JC throws back to 1989

Twenty five years ago, JC was a completely different place.

There were no laptops in class, no iPhones, and no email.

“Students nowadays are not nearly as mannered as they were 25 years ago,” social studies teacher John Hughes said. Hughes was here at JC when the idea for a time capsule was first initiated. “Tuition was $7,000 instead of $15,000, and I used to coach men’s varsity soccer.”

On Sept. 14 after the opening mass, students and faculty members viewed the time capsule made in 1989. Tim Peri, head of SAC in 1989, and Laura Larney (now Mrs. Lang), headed the project and decided what to put inside of the time capsule, and selected specific pieces of technology to show the differences that 25 years can make.Collage Online

But why does the time capsule matter? President Richard O’Hara reminds everybody about the importance of the separation of generations. “It is essential to know where we come from and commemorate everyone who has served in the community,” he said. “So many incredible people were so dedicated and did wonderful things to help develop the school and students here.”

O’Hara believes that “the reason for every new addition to the school is [to serve] the present students, [to respect] the prior contributors, and [to prepare] the next generation.”
