Speech and Debate Team takes first place
The Speech and Debate Team is in the midst of another successful season this year, according to head coach Robert Schick. As of Nov. 29, at least one team member has won a first-place ribbon at all four of their competitions this year.
The team, known as the “Speech Creatures,” competes in meets against other Harford County schools in a variety of events ranging from team debate to oral interpretation of children’s literature.
The team has competed in four meets this year. “We always walk out of there with a number of ribbons,” Schick said.
Speech and debate is an individual competition. As a result, the team can’t win or lose as a whole.
“When we go to a tournament, it’s not us against another school, and there’s a score, and somebody wins and somebody loses. We’re in a whole slew of categories […] they give away a first, a second, and a third ribbon in each category,” Schick said.
At meets, individuals are able to compete directly against students from other schools in categories that interest them.
The “Speech Creatures” plan to compete in another meet at Harford Tech on Dec. 3. “We expect it to be a very fun and successful season,” junior team member Caleb Olsen said.
