Bel Air Safeway roof collapses

In addition to blocked roads and cancelled school, the collapse of the Bel Air Safeway’s roof in the Brierhill Shopping Center can be added to the dramatic results of the recent snowstorm Jonas.

The roof collapsed on Jan. 23, around 3:30 p.m. According to WBAL-TV, Bel Air received around 23 inches of snow from Friday to Sunday. The weight of the snow is cited as a major cause of the roof buckling and collapsing.

“Part of the roof caved in over the produce section […] no one got hurt,” Safeway employee and senior Tona Rimpel said.

According to a Safeway representative, “The store will be closed until further notice because the roof collapsed and has to be fixed.”

The store currently has no heat, and as a result of shifting beams in the roof, is no longer safe to enter. There is currently no timeline on how long it will take for the store to fix the roof and re-open.
