The Student Affairs Council (SAC), has changed its name to the Student Government Association (SGA).

“No one really knows what SAC is,” SAC President senior Kishan Patel said. Patel believes that confusion caused by the title of SAC contributes to a lack of enthusiasm for the organization and the lack of candidates for advisory representatives and leadership positions.

Students like freshman Emily Schultz agreed. “I’m not sure what [SAC] stands for, and I don’t really know much about it,” Schultz said.

Junior class president Emma Gromacki is hopeful that the name change will help generate enthusiasm as well. “By changing [the name] and announcing the change, I think it will raise awareness,” Gromacki said.

Vice President of Technology and Student Affairs Brian Powell welcomed the change and hopes that the new name will get student leaders more recognition. “SGA is a more common title, and everyone knows what it is. When you’re talking to future employers or writing a college essay, they probably won’t know what SAC stands for. They’ll immediately know what SGA is,” Powell said.

The change has been informally implemented but will officially go into effect next year.
