Social Studies Teacher Darrion Siler has moved into the position of college counselor. Mr. Siler, who has taught at John Carroll for eight years, will continue to coach varsity boys baseball.
Mr. Siler has made a lasting impression on students through his role as a U.S. History teacher.
However, his ability to connect with students and provide guidance toward college applications has overall helped his process.
Mr. Siler explained, “I think the reason you go into education is to connect with students and build those relationships with the students while they’re on the journey to find who they are in the classroom.”
He added, “You can certainly make connections, but being one-on-one with them and finding their passions with less distracting noise is easier to make those connections and cherish the relationships to make positive change.”
He will now be helping with college planning, college applications, student scheduling, Senior Seminar class, and working with other counselors to assist with any student needs.
In addition, with his help in college admissions, he added, “It’s really the connection and the students’ relationships that help them find their path and journey. It’s the most important thing that students find their way.”
Students can better understand the college application process and develop important life skills like goal setting, time management, and decision-making.
Mr. Siler said, “I think, in general, it’s listen first and foremost, and meet the student where they are and demonstrate care and compassion; you never know what someone has going on, so you want to be open and help in whatever way you can.”
Also, one of Mr. Siler’s main goals is providing a safe and supportive environment for others to express their concerns and explore more options.
Mr. Siler explained, “My office is always open, and I encourage any student if they need a place to talk or need someone to listen. I enjoy talking to students and am open to anyone, whether a college planning question or what to do for the next step.”
