Members of the John Carroll Green Team now have the opportunity to become green ambassadors. The goal of this program is to help lead and manage projects around campus in order to earn a Maryland Green School certification.
Green Team Moderator Mary Beth Cochran described how it feels to be a green ambassador as “exciting. It makes me happy to know that I am contributing something to the environment. I feel responsible for bettering the environment but also empowered with my ability to make a change.”
Being a green ambassador is focused in education and allows students to make a change by learning sustainable practices to take into their own daily lives.
Green ambassadors will be the connection between the student body and the goals of the green school initiatives.
They will be someone who other students can go to learn about what John Carroll is doing in order to become a Green School.
“Green ambassadors will also champion their own ideas and projects and see them through on campus,” said Ms. Cochran.
Different students can oversee different things. For example, a student could be in charge of plastic bags on campus and making sure that they are always recycled.
Other ambassadors can come up with their own ideas to help the school and environment. They are given the power to choose their own projects and see them through to the end. This is one of the freedoms and empowering parts of being an ambassador.
“I think there is going to be great impact and change from the green ambassadors to bring John Carroll up to the green movement,” said Ms. Cochran. Being a green ambassador also has a positive impact on the environment and school.
To anyone wanting to become a green ambassador, Ms. Cochran said, “If you have any interest in the environment, if you want to become a project manager or be a leader, this is an opportunity to do that.”
