The time has come for the current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors to register for their classes for the 2024-2025 school year.
With a new school year comes the offering of some new courses.
Assistant Principal Danica Attanasio said, “Some new courses this year are Criminal Law, Civil Law, Contemporary Issues, Exploration of Human Rights 2, Honors Theology, (which is available to seniors), and AP Pre-Calculus.”
College Counselors Darrion Siler, Kelly Smith, and Courtney Bradley are now in charge of meeting with students for course requests.
This change is being implemented this year, allowing school counselors to focus more on students’ other needs. Each college counselor has been assigned a group of students to guide them through the process.
Mrs. Bradley said, “We have the best team. Mr. Siler and Mrs. Smith are a great support system, and we really divide and conquer to ensure all bases are covered.”
In regard to changes to the overall registration, Mrs. Attanasio said, “There are no new major changes from previous years. A number of departments are making teacher recommendations for class placements.”
Mrs. Bradley explained that when the college counselors meet individually with students, they review the approved placements for the honors and AP classes.
Aside from the addition of some new courses and the college counselors taking over registration, the overall process is the same as it has been in the past.
Students can request to add, remove, and switch classes by simply emailing their college counselor.
Mrs. Bradley explained that each of the college counselors have been meeting with all rising seniors, juniors, and sophomores to review their requests. “The more prepared students come to our meetings, the easier it is for us to review requirements and submit requests.
Students are asked to identify several alternates in the event their first elective choice does not fit into the schedule. Mrs. Bradley added that they advise students to check their email periodically throughout the summer in case Mrs. Attanasio reaches out regarding their schedule.
Mrs. Attanasio said that when there is a conflict in a student’s schedule, they work with the student to select an alternate course.
Students can freely pick electives and can work with their college counselor to build their schedules, and students will be alerted about what their current teachers have recommended they take next year.
Mrs. Attanasio added that it will take a few months for the full process to be completed, “but we hope to have student requests completed before Spring Break.”
