The Black Student Union held an assembly on February 27, hosting a school-wide gathering to honor Black History Month and the celebration of African American achievements.
The assembly, held in the auditorium, began with a welcome prayer and a reading, acknowledging the accomplishments of the black community. Assistant Principal Danica Attanasio introduced the gathering with a video celebrating Black History Month and how it came to be.
Each year, in honor of BHM, the month of February has a theme. This year’s theme celebrated “African Americans and the Arts,” ultimately recognizing members of history to unify, enlighten, and inspire others to be outstanders.

Freshman Courtney Gray spoke of the memorialization of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and shared a video of his legacy at New Castle University.
Senior Randi Sumler shared her reflections on Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose boundary-pushing artwork challenged conventions and pushed the boundaries of artistic expression.
Additionally, BSU President Tatiana Wilkins and Vice President Zaida Annan also provided students with resources to join BSU.
They emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive space where students could engage in meaningful conversations.
Musical contributions by Bella Voce included an emotional rendition of “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers as a reminder of the support within the JC community.
Senior Maya Millsape performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by James Weldon Johnson as well, reminding everyone of the enduring legacy of resilience and hope that defines the African American experience.
BSU Moderator Kira Sconion ‘95 made a guest appearance, offering valuable insights into the importance of confidence, courage, constructivism, and kindness in the understanding of diversity.
